Nivea manufacturer Beiersdorf has commenced work on a state-of-the-art production centre for cosmetics products, in a bid to secure “long-term, sustainable growth” and bring innovative sustainable packaging solutions to market.

Located in Leipzig, Germany, the new 32,000 m2  facility would help to “future-proof supply chain infrastructure in the heart of Europe,” with up to 450 million cosmetic products set to come off its production line each year, Beiersdorf said.

Featuring a modular, flexible design, the new plant would also be able to react agilely to new technologies, consumer demands and market developments.

The new building would also be “completely carbon neutral” through the use of renewable energy and feature the ability to recover and process heat, wastewater and ethanol.

At a product level, new technical conditions would also make it possible “to bring innovative, sustainable packaging solutions to the market” including aerosol cans made from recycled aluminium, Beiersdorf added.

Speaking as he laid the new plant's cornerstone, Beiersdorf CEO Vincent Warnery said: “This is a unique project for Beiersdorf. To build a completely new production plant for Central Europe in Germany is a great opportunity for us and also the region.

“We look forward to the future of the new plant with excitement and great expectations.”

The laying of the cornerstone was also attended by Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer and local Mayor Burkhard Jung.
