Boots has launched a nationwide initiative designed to spark meaningful conversations and rekindle memories for people affected by dementia, using beauty and lifestyle items carefully selected to trigger recognition and connection through sensory experiences.

To mark Dementia Action Week (19-25 May 2025), the health and beauty retailer has created over 1,000 multi-sensory memory boxes, which are being distributed to care homes and communities across the UK.

Filled with items selected for their familiar scents, sounds, and textures, each box is designed to engage the senses and support those living with dementia by evoking memories and encouraging connection.

For example, familiar toiletries and soaps may evoke memories of a loved one, while the scent of cough medicine or bath salts can recall moments of caring for themselves or others. The boxes also include items that feature nostalgic sounds - like the click of an old powder compact or the shutter of a vintage camera- designed to further stimulate memory and recognition.

Many of the items included in the Boots Memory Boxes have been donated by the high street chain's team members, partners, and suppliers.

The initiative follows research by Professor Victoria Tischler that supports the connection between smell, handling familiar objects and memory, conducted using the Boots Memory Boxes. As part of this, the findings show that familiar scents and tactile objects can boost mood, trigger memory recall, and promote social connection in people with dementia.

Sophie Clapp, Company Archivist at Boots, said: "With over 175 years of history, Boots is a brand that has been part of people's lives through generations. Through this initiative, we can use our rich history and extensive archive to spark connections between those affected by dementia and their loved ones and carers over shared memories and experiences.

"It has been great to see the positive impact the memory boxes have had through the research with Professor Tischler and to see how much the boxes have meant to the care home residents that have received them so far."

Alongside distributing 1,000 memory boxes to care homes, Boots has created a free online resource with guidance for carers on building their own memory boxes to help spark memories and meaningful conversations at home.
