In a quarter of a century supplying the British high street, Stephen Samraj has never faced a crisis like this.

Samraj, a director at Sri Lankan clothing manufacturer Vogue Tex, has seen a third of his orders cancelled in the past fortnight — and he does not expect it to stop there. With the global fashion industry on hold indefinitely and no sign of a substantive rescue package from his government, the 56-year-old is fretting over how he will pay his 7,000 staff.
