Editors' Top Reads: News from JVN, Space NK, The Inkey List and more...
Here are some of this week’s news and features highlights handpicked by TheIndustry.beauty team.
JVN strengthens product portfolio and targets UK growth under new owner
When US group Amyris Inc entered Chapter 11 last year, I did genuinely fear for what might happen to the JVN haircare brand from hairdresser, entrepreneur and Netflix star Jonathan Van Ness. Van Ness poured his heart and soul into this product, along with hero ingredient hemisqalane, to produce a range of inclusive and effective haircare that anyone can use. It's fairly priced and it smells divine too.
It was a relief, therefore, when it was acquired by Windsong Global at the end of last year, and even more of a relief when news reached me this week that a new Nuture hair mask had been added to the range and Van Ness and Windsong had identified the UK as a market of strategic importance and are planning activations this summer, in partnership with retailer SpaceNK, to push for further growth here. It seems like Van Ness has found a new partner who believes in his products as much as he does. And that's a good thing for Van Ness and for us, as seeing more of JVN, the person and the brand, is never going to be a bad thing,

Everything you need to know about the British Beauty Council’s new industry-wide census
The British Beauty Council launched an industry-wide census this week as it looks to find out what beauty really means to its workers and consumers, marking the biggest research project in its history.
It is hoped the findings will encourage a perception shift in how the sector is seen by the public, while helping the British Beauty Council respond to the concerns of those who work in it. I did it this week and would encourage others to do the same to help the British Beauty Council as it works to shift the perception of the industry and lead important changes to help it thrive. The results will be presented at British Beauty Week 2024, which will run from 23-27 October.

The Inkey List enters colour cosmetics with three plumping lip tints
The Inkey List has garnered a devout fanbase for its high-quality skincare at affordable prices. Now, the brand has branched out into colour cosmetics for the first time since its launch over five years ago.
The first releases come in the form of lip tints; if you're anything like me and have been dying to try Hailey Bieber's Rhode's sold-out tinted Peptide Lip Treatments, these might be the next best thing. Described as a non-sticky alternative to lip gloss, the Tripeptide Plumping Lip Balm Tints promise to hydrate, repair, and plump lips, leaving them naturally fuller with a hint of colour.
There has been a growing trend for colour cosmetics brands branching into skincare lines - think Trinny London and Charlotte Tilbury - but this time, it's the other way around. With tinted lip balms becoming more and more coveted, especially with summer on the horizon, these are sure to be a hit.

In History: Space NK, a timeline of a beauty retail trailblazer
News emerged this week that Space NK owner Manzanita Capital has hired bankers to handle the sale of the retailer, appointing financial services firm Raymond James to oversee an auction later this year.
It comes on the back of robust trading for the beauty business as it continues to strategically invest in its online and in-store experiences. One source said that based on Space NK's financial performance, it could be worth between £300 million and £400 million. I am eager to see how this sale process develops. In the meantime, though, here's an in-depth look at its milestone moments over the years as a sale looms.
