Eco beauty brand Faith In Nature has appointed a director to represent nature on its board, according to The Guardian.

Faith in Nature, which sells natural beauty products, claims it is the first company in the world to give nature a formal vote on corporate decisions that might affect it. The appointment will give the natural world a legal say in the brand's business strategy.

Working with lawyers from Lawyers for Nature and the Earth Law Center, alongside a pro bono team of corporate experts at international law firm Shearman & Sterling LLP, the brand has updated its corporate documents to say that it will "do its best to have a positive impact on nature as a whole and to minimise the prospect of any harmful impact of its business operations on nature”.

A new Non-Executive Director will join the brand's next board meeting later this month to speak on behalf of the natural world. The Guardian reports that the first person to hold the position is Brontie Ansell, a Senior Lecturer in law in Essex Law School and Director of Lawyers for Nature.

In a statement on LinkedIn, Faith In Nature said: "Today's a big one. Not just for Faith In Nature, but we hope for many other businesses too. And especially so for nature. We're thrilled to announce that we've made nature a director of our company, recognising the rights of nature and planting them firmly in our company constitution."
