How I started in beauty: The Organic Pharmacy General Manager, Jean-Christophe Samyn
The Organic Pharmacy was founded in 2002 by Margo Marrone, a trained pharmacist and herbalist, with the aim of bridging clinical skincare and natural wellness. The brand is recognised for its pharmacy-led approach to beauty, offering a range of high-performance, results-driven products.
The company is now led by General Manager Jean-Christophe Samyn who joined at the end of last year to support its next phase of growth and international expansion. He brings extensive global experience and a deep understanding of the international beauty market, with a focus on strengthening sales performance and increasing brand visibility. Prior to joining The Organic Pharmacy, he spent more than 15 years in senior leadership roles at French skincare brand Caudalie.
In this interview with TheIndustry.beauty, Samyn discusses his transition into the brand, what he values most about his current role and his outlook for The Organic Pharmacy’s future under his leadership.

Have you always had an interest in beauty? Why does it appeal to you and why did you want to work within it?
I’ve always been fascinated by beauty, even before I realised it could become a career. What I love about this industry is that it sits at the intersection of emotion and business - it’s creative, but also incredibly strategic.
Over time, skincare in particular has become my true passion - the combination of science, sensoriality and ritual is endlessly interesting, and the relationship consumers build with a brand can be incredibly loyal and meaningful. That’s what makes it such a special industry to work in.
Tell us about your first job in beauty. What drew you to the role? What this experience was like?
My first role in beauty was in international sales, working across export markets for a fragrance brand. I was drawn to it because it felt global, dynamic and full of opportunity. I loved the idea of travelling, understanding different markets and helping brands grow beyond their home country.
It was a real introduction to the pace and intensity of the beauty world - fast-moving and competitive. It was the perfect entry point because it gave me both a commercial foundation and the excitement of seeing how brands are built internationally.
What were the most valuable skills or lessons you gained from that first experience?
The biggest lesson I learnt early on is that beauty is built on trust - and trust takes time.
From that first experience, I gained a very strong commercial mindset and learned how to protect a brand’s positioning while still driving growth.
But I also learned the human side of the industry. Beauty is a relationship business. Whether it’s distributors, retailers, the press or internal teams, everything comes down to credibility, clarity and consistency. Once you’ve built strong relationships, you realise how powerful they can be in creating long-term success.
What do you most enjoy about your current role?
What I love most is the opportunity to build - to take a brand with a strong identity and help it grow into its next chapter.
At The Organic Pharmacy, the combination of heritage, clinical credibility and natural positioning is incredibly exciting. It’s a brand with a real story, and it resonates strongly with today’s consumer expectations.
I also enjoy the variety of the role: shaping strategy across markets, developing teams, driving retail partnerships, building DTC momentum and ensuring everything remains aligned with the brand DNA.

If you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice at the very start of your career, what would it be - and why?
I would tell my younger self not to put so much pressure on getting everything right. The early stages of a career can feel like a test, but they are really a training ground. The best lessons come from trying, failing occasionally and staying curious enough to keep improving.
What does the next chapter of your own career look like and how are you hoping to grow from here?
The next chapter is very much about scaling with purpose - building The Organic Pharmacy internationally without losing what makes it special.
I’ve spent my career between Europe and Asia, and I’m passionate about helping skincare brands grow across different regions, retail landscapes and consumer expectations. The challenge is always the same: how do you scale while protecting the brand’s identity and credibility?
Consumers are more educated, more demanding and more values-driven than ever. Brands have to be sharper, more authentic and more disciplined. That’s exactly the type of challenge I enjoy.
Has there been a person in beauty that you have always admired and why?
I’ve always admired Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas, the founders of Caudalie. They represent the kind of leadership I find truly inspiring in beauty - building a brand with strong values, a long-term vision and genuine product credibility, while still keeping it relevant, desirable and modern.
Having spent 15 years at Caudalie, it had a deep impact on both my career and my personality. It shaped the way I think about brand building, consistency, storytelling and execution. More than anything, it taught me that success in beauty comes from staying true to your DNA while constantly evolving.
That experience continues to influence the way I lead today and the standards I hold myself to when growing a brand internationally.
