If window shopping is dead, then so is the high street

Remember window shopping? When you used to drive the family to a mega mall for a fun morning out, or take a leisurely stroll around a favourite boutique just to see what was new? When, even if after four hours of slow walking and a lunch break, you went home empty handed, it could still feel like time well spent? It’s a sport that, I suspect, could be finished with after the coronavirus pandemic.

Going shopping has had to be mission-like and clinical lately. For a trip to the supermarket you might need to put on a mask and gloves, queue for 45 minutes, wipe down a trolley, follow a one-way system and sterilise everything you bought, wore and touched when you get home. ‘Popping’ to the shops is no longer a viable proposition.
