Insurers refuse to pay out on virus shutdown claims

Most pubs and restaurants would have been unable to claim on their insurance even if ministers had demanded a total shutdown to combat the coronavirus outbreak, industry experts have said.

When the Government refused to order mass closures and simply encouraged customers to stay away instead, furious bosses said the decision would make it impossible for them to seek a pay-out under business interruption cover.

But insurance insiders said that most of these companies would have been denied cash anyway because interventions by the state are not included.
