Karen Millen sheds a tear over buyout by Boohoo
Just a few months shy of her 60th birthday, Karen Millen can still fit into a pair of wool trousers she acquired in the 1990s from the high street brand bearing her name. “We did good trousers,” she says. “They were a classic cut and we always used good fabrics.”
The trousers are symbolic of a bygone slow-fashion era, when garments were bought to be kept. You are unlikely to find them at Boohoo, the £4.6 billion fast-fashion online retailer that sells garments for as little as a few pounds. Boohoo bought Karen Millen and Coast in 2019, followed by Warehouse and Oasis last year.
