Kiehl’s has analysed data from its Instant Skin Reader service to identify the "biggest spring skin concerns" amongst its customers.

Launched in 2022, the Instant Skin Reader allows users to photograph themselves on their phone or desktop to access personalised skincare advice. The technology identifies problem areas to recommend a skincare routine customised to each user.

With the recent change of seasons comes new weather conditions and, subsequently, new skin concerns. In a recent study, Kiehl’s found that customers with oily and high skin sensitivity typically seek skincare advice in spring.

The data showed a rise in high skin sensitivity and revealed that 15% of respondents with sensitive skin sought advice during March 2022, compared to just 2% in October 2022.

Additionally, whilst February saw customers reach out for help with dry skin, 49% of respondents who sought skincare advice in March looked to tackle oily skin.

Commenting on the findings, Dr Beibei Du-Harpur said: "As the seasons change, it can have a big impact on our skin. The fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels, can lead to challenges in keeping skin in a stable, healthy state. People may experience heightened sensitivity, oiliness, and breakouts, as suggested by the study."

More trends...

Boots released its annual Beauty Trends Report last month, revealing the top six trends it expects to "shape the world of beauty" in 2023. As part of this, the retailer expects skincare goals to shift towards maintaining skin health with barrier-bettering ingredients. In addition, trends that began in skincare are expected to "revolutionise" the haircare category in 2023 and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is likely to continue influencing how consumers shop for beauty.

Superdrug has also recently looked at consumer insights and habits to reveal its top beauty and lifestyle predictions for the year. The retailer said self-care will continue to boom, with a greater focus on sexual wellness and the hormone journey. It also predicts that inclusivity and diversity within the beauty industry will remain a top priority, as well as the awareness of sun-damage to skin.
