With the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 fast approaching, Liverpool ONE is anticipating an increase in footfall and has announced plans to celebrate the occasion.

Hosted on behalf of Ukraine, the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will take place at the Liverpool Arena on Saturday 13 May, with the Semi-Finals scheduled earlier that week on Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 May.

To mark the occasion, the retail and leisure destination has announced a number of celebratory initiatives around music, art and community. In addition, the tourist information centre at Liverpool ONE will become the central hub for all things Eurovision, including information about the whole city region.

A number of fashion and beauty activations are expected to be taking place throughout the city in the weeks leading to the event, with brands and retailers desperate to capitalise on the increasing footfall expected to the city.

Liverpool ONE has forecasted an increase in footfall of around 8% in the run up to summer as the city prepares for the Eurovision Song Contest, plus seasonal peaks expected at Easter and May half term.

Art & Community

The celebrations begin with a variety of floral displays located across Liverpool ONE in the run up to the contest. In place until 14 May, the installations give a "special nod" to Eurovision and the Ukrainian flag colours of blue and yellow.

Liverpool ONE will also display an array of decorated eggs, each one designed by local artists working with schoolchildren and Ukrainian refugees. The seven eggs will embody the theme of ‘United by Music’ and pay tribute to the Ukrainian tradition of egg painting, known as ‘pysanka’, which is a central part of Ukrainian culture around Easter.

From April, giant flags from each competing country in Eurovision will be fitted across the open-air complex. New decorations have also commissioned with artists including Liverpool-based Jazz Stan and Ukrainian freehand artist Myro.

Music & Community

Liverpool ONE’s piano festival will be making a pop-up appearance for three weeks to champion local talent. From 26 April, five pianos will be placed across the destination, encouraging both amateur and professional players to showcase their skills.

Eurovision hits will also be streamed from speakers across the destination's Paradise Street, with staged performances planned in partnership with LIPA, LIPA Sixth Form and Liverpool City College at Liverpool ONE's Chavasse Park.

Donna Howitt, Place Strategy Director at Liverpool ONE, said: "This year, it’s extra special as we prepare for the arrival of Eurovision. There’s already an amazing buzz as we get ready for the main event, so we’re thrilled to be launching the majority of our plans for Eurovision and kick-starting them with our floral installations across Liverpool ONE.

"Since it was confirmed that Liverpool would be hosting Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine, we’ve been busy putting together our calendar of events working with city partners, artist and community groups. We strive to place community and culture at the heart of everything we do, so it was vital that our Eurovision schedule had these things in abundance."
