L’Oréal launches £100m sustainable innovation accelerator to revolutionise beauty retail
L’Oréal Groupe has launched its Sustainable Innovation Accelerator - an initiative designed to fast-track sustainability solutions in the beauty sector. With €100 million (£88 million) pledged over the next five years, the global beauty giant is reaffirming its commitment to sustainability.
Targeted at start-ups, SMEs and established companies, the programme is focused on commercially scalable innovations across key environmental and social pillars: low-carbon solutions, water-resilience, nature-based ingredients, plastic elimination, circular resource management and inclusive business models.
This move comes at a time when sustainability is no longer a selling point but an imperative. Beauty retailers are under mounting pressure from eco-conscious consumers and evolving regulations.
L’Oréal is partnering with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) to source, pilot and scale these solutions.
Ezgi Barcenas, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer of the L'Oréal Groupe, said: "At L'Oréal, we have always embraced and nurtured innovation, co-creating with partners across our value chain to drive positive change within the beauty industry.
"As we work with our ecosystem to pave the way for a more sustainable future, we know that we have to be even more intentional in seeking, advancing and scaling pioneering solutions. We are looking forward to collaborating with a growing number of innovators and problem solvers worldwide."
The accelerator will run for up to 12 months, offering selected applicants access to a programme that includes coaching, mentorship and possible investment to bring their innovations to scale.
James Cole, Chief Innovation Officer at CISL and Executive Director of Canopy, added: "In today's rapidly changing world, collaboration is key to driving meaningful progress. We are thrilled to partner with L'Oréal on this important initiative, leveraging our combined expertise to source and accelerate commercially relevant solutions for the challenges facing the beauty industry and beyond."
Applications for the accelerator programme are now open until 30 September.
