Makeup artist Mary Greenwell has been honoured with an MBE in HM The King’s Birthday Honours List 2025, recognising her contributions to the beauty and fashion industries as well as her charitable work.
Greenwell is widely regarded as one of the most influential makeup artists in the global fashion and beauty industries.
She began her career assisting Ilana Harkavi, a fellow makeup artist and the owner of Il Makiage, before relocating to Paris in the mid-1980s. There, she worked with a number of renowned photographers, quickly establishing herself within the industry.
Her career soon saw her regularly traveling between New York, London, and Paris for editorial shoots, collaborating with famous faces such as Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, and Diana, Princess of Wales.
Alongside her editorial work, Greenwell was also involved in the early years of London Fashion Week. Often working alongside long-time friend and hairstylist Sam McKnight, she enjoyed the backstage buzz, collaborating with designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson to create a variety of runway-ready makeup looks.
His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List recognises people who have given exceptional service to the UK abroad and internationally.
Also among the recipients is Sian Eleri Westerman, Senior Adviser at Rothschild & Co and British Fashion Council Board Member, who has been recognised for her contributions to the fashion and beauty industries, as well as her dedicated charitable efforts.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "This year’s Birthday Honours List is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary dedication, compassion, and service that exists in every corner of our country.
"From community champions to cultural icons, each recipient reflects the very best of Britain. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them all."
