Gen Z consumers are favouring simple skincare routines, according to a new survey that explores the biggest skincare mistakes being made by this demographic.

In a highly-saturated skincare market, it can be difficult for consumers to know what products to use, the best for each skin type, or even which ingredients they should be looking for when purchasing.

However, in a recent study, Tropic Skincare surveyed 2,000 people and found that 40% of Gen Z admit to being 'too busy' to follow a skincare routine at all, the most out of any other age group.

And with searches for 'easy skincare routine' soaring by 1,043%, it’s clear that people are looking for a simple skincare solution.

The study found:

  • 37% of Gen Z are not applying SPF everyday.
  • 40% of Gen Z do not moisturise their skin daily - the most out of any age range.
  • Affordable price is the most important factor when buying skincare for those aged 18-25.
  • 37% of Gen Z do not check the expiry date of skincare products.
  • 27% of Gen Z admit to not taking their makeup off at the end of the day.
  • Just 13% of 18-25 year-olds admit to being influenced into by TikTok into buying skincare, compared to 31% of millennials.
  • 38% of Gen Z admit to feeling overwhelmed when buying skincare products.

The data also suggests that not only do 38% of Gen Z feel overwhelmed when buying skincare but 1.9 million Gen Z in the UK are spending between £200-£249 on products each year.

It comes as 46% of Gen Z are expecting to see results from a new skincare product within one week, which Tropic says could explain why this age group is feeling overwhelmed as unrealistic expectations are being set.

Susie Ma, Founder and CEO at Tropic Skincare, said: "It’s interesting to see that 38% of Gen Z audiences feel overwhelmed when it comes to purchasing skincare, however, with so many products on the market and various myths and misconceptions around the best products to use, it isn’t actually that surprising.

"With so much information at our fingertips, deciding on an effective skincare routine for different skin types can appear complicated. Here at Tropic, we're on a mission to simplify skincare for all ages and show how our products can be used in multiple ways."
