47 Skin is shining a light on the UK’s perception of acne and the significant effect on those experiencing it, supported by new survey findings commissioned by the brand.

Conducted nationwide with 2,000 respondents aged 18-65, the survey delves into societal attitudes towards acne to understand the ramifications on individuals’ mental and emotional wellbeing.

With acne being one of the most prevalent dermatological conditions globally, affecting millions of people of all ages, genders and backgrounds, 47 Skin believes that the data exemplifies the need for even greater awareness and support.

The survey findings

Exploring the common perceptions around acne:

According to the data, breakouts are understood to be in the top three skin concerns in the UK, alongside dryness and wrinkles.

It comes as 21% of UK consumers thought that they would only experience breakouts as a teen when growing up, despite 48% of respondents also experiencing acne in their adult years.

50% of those surveyed believe that eating greasy food causes breakouts, while 39% believe poor hygiene is to blame – which 47 Skin said highlights "the misconceptions of acne and how this perpetuates the negativity surrounding it". Over a quarter of respondents worry about SPF causing breakouts too.

Uncovering the emotional journey of acne sufferers:

48% of respondents said they feel self-conscious when experiencing breakouts, with 27% admitting to comparing their skin to others and feeling inadequate, according to the data.

Just under 50% also admitted to hiding breakouts with makeup, while over 50% said they consciously cover body breakouts with strategic clothing during sunny weather. 54% of respondents’ biggest concerns on their body are spots, blemishes and scarring.

Exposing the truth behind beauty standards:

74% agreed that social media creates unrealistic expectations about having perfect skin, with 46% of 18-34 year olds sharing that social media has made them feel conscious towards their breakouts. It comes as 61% of this same age range get skincare advice from Instagram, whilst 64% find it via TikTok.

Revealing the UK regions suffering with breakouts the most:

The survey found that Londoners are the most concerned about breakouts in the UK at 41%, followed by Yorkshire at 30%.

In fact, 40% of Londoners admit to being paranoid when meeting new people due to breakouts and 39% shared their confidence is negatively impacted during social gatherings. Those living in London are also most likely to cover their breakouts with makeup at 41%, followed by the West Midlands at 32%.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire, Northern Ireland and South East/East Midlands admitted to knowing the least about skincare.

Founded in 2018, 47 Skin is rooted in the concept of skin positivity. Its inception stems from the personal journey of its founder, who grappled with acne for an extended period until discovering a distinctive formula that proved effective.

Driven by the desire to extend this breakthrough to others and foster a sense of confidence in their skin, 47 Skin was launched.

Today, the brand's product line-up includes a best-selling Anti-Blemish & Scar Repair Serum, as well as an Everyday Cleanser, Intensive Treatment Silver Mask, Daily Moisturiser, and more.
