Paul Smith unveils first home fragrance and candle collection
Paul Smith has unveiled his first home fragrance collection, inspired by the British designer's "most treasured memories" and his love of colour and bold design.
Four fragrances have been created and each one is available in a single-wick candle (240g), triple-wick candle (1kg) and a reed diffuser (250ml).
Crafted by IFF (International Flavors and Fragrances) perfumers Celine Barel and Meabh McCurtin, each fragrance is named for idiomatic character and personality traits with a nod to the designer's British sense of humour.
They include:
Botanist: inspired by the clean-cut tailoring at the designer's first Nottingham shop. Containing notes of Haitian vetiver, moss and lemon it evokes freshly-cut grass and greenery.
Bookworm: a scent reminiscent of the stacks of books and papers in Paul Smith's office and evoking libraries and warm amber. It is formulated with Jamaican pimento berry, grapefruit and cedar wood.
Early Bird: this recalls the railings on Paul Smith's London shop and is designed to recreate the scent of rain falling onto wet pavements on a cloudy morning. It is blended with notes of Indonesian patchouli oil, iris and rain accord.
Daydreamer: inspired by the designer's summer holidays and evokes walled herb gardens and cycling through sunny fields. It is made with French lavender oil, clary sage and verbena.
These are contained in reusable and collectible glass containers that recall Smith's signature bold stripes design motif. Each vessel comes with a lid (that doubles up as a coaster) in a contrasting colour and can be reused as either a jar or vase. The outer-boxes feature a "zippered" design to protect the main packaging and to eliminate the need for cellophane.
"The journey I've been on to create the fragrances for my first ever candle and diffuser collection has been a fascinating one, guided by some incredible parfumers. I have really enjoyed the process of working with Meabh and Celine and it gave me the chance to reflect on some of my favourite memories, moments and key places in a new way.
"The creative process didn't end with the fragrance, I was always very keen to place a lot of focus on he design of the vessels themselves. I really enjoy the combination of colour and light in the containers and I hope they will become keepsakes in their own right," Paul Smith said.
The introduction of the home fragrances follows on from the launch Paul Smith Home earlier this year. The candles and diffuser will be available online and in-store from September. They were previewed to the industry at a launch event in London's Soho with separate rooms created to reflect the mood of the fragrance.
