Selfridges boss Anne Pitcher on the toughest gig in the world

By 7.30am, the “corner shop” within Selfridges’ flagship store in London is already a frenzy of activity. Workers are ferrying in fixtures to the prime pitch — so called because it sits at the corner of Oxford Street and Duke Street rather than because it sells milk and newspapers — conferring over layouts and shouting to make themselves heard above blaring music.

“This place is busier at night than it is during the day,” quips Anne Pitcher, the managing director of Selfridges Group.
