In the spirit of Christmas, Superdrug and its long-term charity partner Beauty Banks today launched ‘The Beauty Gift Appeal’ campaign, encouraging people to donate beauty and hygiene gifts to those in need.

Beauty Banks’ need for donations is at an all-time high this year, with usage up by 60-80% compared to previous years. The charity estimated that up to 8 million people could be living in hygiene poverty this winter, with an extra 320,000 people using food banks.

Thousands of households are forced to access a charity service for the first time this year due to the rising cost of living. Aside from food, hygiene products are among items needed most this Christmas.

Superdrug's recent survey found that 84% of people said that the current cost of living has added pressure to Christmas and 76% have consciously changed their Christmas shopping habits this year in order to spend less.

Sali Hughes, Beauty Banks Co-Founder, commented: “We all know that the current cost of living crisis has hit people really hard. Whilst hygiene essentials are urgently in need, we also know that many people will forego Christmas gifts this year in order to afford the basics and that’s why we are asking those who can afford to this Christmas, to donate to The Beauty Gift Appeal.”

This year, Superdrug and Beauty Banks have partnered so that customers can easily donate gifts and hygiene products as part of ‘The Beauty Appeal’ in 100 Superdrug stores across the UK. Anyone can donate by dropping products to a ‘Beauty Spot’ in their local branch.

The appeal urges shoppers to donate ‘shower gels and soaps, moisturisers, hairbrushes, hair products, male-grooming items such as shaving gel, sanitary products, and nappies.’ Christmas gifts are also encouraged, helping to spread joy this Christmas.

Simon Comins, Chief Commercial Officer at Superdrug, added: “We are proud to support Beauty Banks and partner with them on The Beauty Gift Appeal campaign. Superdrug will be donating £5,000 worth of beauty, personal care, and Christmas gifting products to banks across the country and will continue to support our customers and those that need it at this time."
