Superdrug's apprenticeship programme doubles in size as applications soar
Superdrug’s Rise Up Apprenticeship Programme is on the up. In just five years, it has doubled in size, supporting over 5,000 apprentices, and this year looks set to break records again.
The programme’s growth mirrors a wider shift among young people towards earning while learning and prioritising hands-on experience over traditional university routes.
Amy Davies, People Director at Superdrug, said: "With student debt now averaging £44,000 and graduate job prospects increasingly competitive, more people are turning to our Rise Up Apprenticeship Programme. It stands out because it offers paid, practical experience, nationally recognised qualifications, and clear career progression."
The scheme offers three tailored pathways. Apprentice Sales Advisors, aged 16-19, gain a first role in retail alongside a nationally recognised qualification over 13 months. Apprentice Team Leaders, 19+, spend 13-15 months preparing for junior management roles, while the Apprentice Manager pathway, lasting 15-24 months, develops leadership or specialist skills for senior positions. The programme also welcomes career changers of all ages.
Jake Hardcastle is a success story. He joined straight from school and is now Superdrug’s Digital Content Lead. "I learnt, earned and grew every single day. My apprenticeship opened doors I never thought possible," he said.
Another apprentice, Jodie Pearson, added: "The real-life experience made me feel capable for the first time. I’d urge anyone thinking about applying to do so."
Rise Up now has over 5,000 alumni, with more than 90% securing long-term roles and a completion rate 10% higher than the industry average. The programme is set to support over 600 active apprentices by 2026.
Applications are now open for the next intake. Candidates must be out of full-time education and, if aged 16-18, have at least a Grade 4/C GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
The apprenticeship programme comes as Superdrug continues to grow its business. The retailer reported a 7% increase in sales last year, with profit before tax up 22.6% to £136.8 million.
Its omnichannel strategy is paying off: 13 new stores opened, 45 existing stores were refreshed, and its digital offerings, including an improved website and customer app now with over five million members, have strengthened its online presence. The Superdrug Marketplace also expanded, listing over 41,000 products and delivering a 107% year-on-year increase in online sales.
