The Interview: How Rheal’s founder created a modern wellness brand rooted in lived experience

Rheal is a British wellness brand founded in 2017 by Charlotte Ali and Sean Ali, built on a shared commitment to making nutrition simpler through natural, wholefood-based supplements.

The idea for the brand grew from Charlotte Ali’s personal health journey, which included persistent fatigue, low immunity and complications related to coeliac disease - an autoimmune condition in which gluten damages the small intestine. These experiences led the pair to explore superfood-led approaches to nutrition and overall wellbeing.

From this starting point, they began formulating products built around real, functional ingredients, prioritising naturally derived nutrition over synthetic alternatives.

Since then, Rheal has evolved into a broader wellness range spanning energy, digestion, hydration, and hormonal support, most recently expanding into a prenatal range, with a consistent focus on making supplementation more accessible, practical and easy to integrate into everyday routines.

In this interview with TheIndustry.beauty, Ali tells us more about the inspiration behind Rheal and its growth, the impact of the wellness boom on the business and her long-term ambitions for the brand.

Rheal

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Rheal? What problem were you personally trying to solve when you started the business?

In many ways, I was Rheal’s first customer - and guinea pig.

Following my coeliac disease diagnosis in 2013, my health was at an all-time low. I was struggling with gut health, nutrient deficiencies, poor skin, and persistent fatigue, with very little support or guidance from medical professionals. So my husband and co-founder, Sean, and I decided to take matters into our own hands.

We began researching natural, holistic approaches and discovered ingredients I’d never come across before - baobab for blood sugar regulation, barley grass for digestive health. We started making our own formulas, and after a few weeks of consistency, the difference was remarkable: more energy, clearer skin and better gut health.

That was the moment we knew we had to share these incredible ingredients more widely - to inspire others to take control of their health through natural whole foods.

As someone living with coeliac disease, how did that experience shape the original idea and direction of the brand?

Having coeliac disease taught me that it isn’t just about what you cut out - it’s about what you add in. Coeliacs are at significantly higher risk of deficiencies in nutrients like vitamin D, B12 and iron, all of which are essential for immunity and overall health. Yet, as a community, we’re so often dismissed as fussy eaters, when the reality is far more serious. I wanted to use my story and platform to be a voice for that community, and to show that by incorporating more nutritious foods alongside a balanced diet, you really can make a difference to how you feel.

What did you launch with initially and how has the product range evolved since then?

The two products we launched with in autumn 2017 are actually still with us today - Clean Greens to support immunity and digestion, and Berry Beauty for skin health. Both have been refined significantly over the years as we’ve improved our formulations to be as effective and enjoyable as possible. From there, the range has grown to cover all areas of daily health and wellness: organic superfood blends for hormonal balance, functional drinks like mushroom matcha, targeted health capsules and daily electrolytes - and there are plenty more exciting new products on the way this year.

How do you decide what to launch next?

Our community is always our starting point. We listen closely to understand what they’re looking for, what gaps we’re not yet filling, and what they’re struggling with. As a brand, we’ve always put quality and transparency at the forefront - two things that are often overlooked in this category. When we launch a product, our community trusts that it genuinely delivers the benefits it promises, using the best quality ingredients available.

Rheal

You’ve recently launched into the prenatal category - what did you feel was missing from that market?

Honestly, so much was missing! When I found out I was pregnant, I went down a deep rabbit hole - researching which nutrients I needed, in what amounts, and, crucially, in what forms. So many prenatals on the market miss the mark: they contain bulking agents, inflammatory ingredients and less bioavailable forms of key nutrients, none of which is what you need when you’re growing a baby. Even smaller details matter enormously - like scent. Many of the cleaner formulas smell terrible, which is really not what you want when you’re already nauseous. I’m genuinely proud that we thought through those details, because they only come from lived experience.

Are there other categories or formats you’re excited for Rheal to move into next?

Definitely. We know that collagen is something our community is either already taking or really interested in, so that’s coming next. And as a mama myself, children’s nutrition feels like a natural and important space for us to move into. I’d love for Rheal to be a brand that supports whole families - including my own growing one!

Wellness has become a major category - why do you think it’s taken off so strongly in recent years?

The COVID-19 pandemic was a catalyst. There was a real and noticeable shift in how people thought about their health - a move from reactive to proactive. People started prioritising their wellbeing in a much more intentional way and that mindset shift has absolutely stuck.

Rheal

How has this shift impacted your business, both positively and in terms of competition?

Initially, it was hugely positive for us. As a direct-to-consumer brand - both through our own website and on Amazon - we were well placed to reach people who were actively seeking the support they needed. Of course, growing demand also brought more competition, but we’ve honestly always seen that as a good thing. It pushes you to sharpen your thinking, stay close to what makes you different and keep raising the bar.

What do you think have been the key drivers behind the brand’s growth and success?

A number of things, honestly. Sean and I started Rheal with no outside investment, no professional backing - just a lot of grit and determination. That scrappy start-up mentality has never left us and I think it’s a big part of why we’ve grown profitably. But above all, it’s our team.

Nothing we’ve achieved would have been possible without the talented, dedicated people around us. From the warehouse team packing every single order, to our customer experience team who go above and beyond every day, to our manufacturing partners who finish their shifts smelling of Clean Greens- every person makes a real impact, and that never goes unnoticed.

What are your long-term ambitions for Rheal?

From day one, our ambition has been to build a brand that people genuinely trust - one that delivers products that truly support health and wellness, done the right way. That will never change. I want Rheal to become a household staple, supporting families across the UK and beyond to feel healthier and happier every day.
