THG to make fresh job cuts as it orders staff back to the office

THG, the owner of Cult Beauty and Lookfantastic, is cutting 171 jobs across various departments and is ordering employees to return to the office five days a week.

The e-commerce company is understood to have put 581 jobs at risk as it looks to scrap 171 roles across six divisions, including beauty and nutrition, according to The Financial Times.

It follows approximately 160 job cuts made across THG's marketing, sales and warehouse teams earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the company said it was restructuring parts of the business "to ensure we continue to leverage recent investments, including in automation, technology and AI".

"Subject to the ongoing consultation, these changes will likely result in a limited number of roles becoming redundant.

"Whilst this is regrettable, THG will support all affected colleagues and seek to offer them an alternative role within the group."

The news comes as staff at the Manchester-based company are told they must work five days a week in the office starting next month after previous plans to ditch remote working faced pushback.

Employees were told they had to start returning to the office as its current hybrid and remote working patterns had negatively impacted the culture of the firm, the Financial Times also reported.

At the end of last year, THG urged staff to stop working from home but said a level of flexibility would be allowed.

Now, the company has told employees in a memo that "adherence to the policy has been inconsistent", meaning staff have until 19 August before working full-time in office. Flexible working agreements that were approved before the decision will be upheld.
