Angus Mitchell, the son of renowned hairstylist Paul Mitchell and co-owner of John Paul Mitchell Systems, has passed away at the age of 53 at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Angus Mitchell partially inherited his father's haircare company John Paul Mitchell System upon Paul Mitchell's passing from pancreatic cancer in April 1989, also at the age of 53.

In 1980, during the days of endless supplies of hairspray and voluminour hair, Paul Mitchell and his friend John Paul Dejoria founded the Paul Mitchell brand with just $700 and three products. Today, the company has grown into John Paul Mitchell Systems, boasting a portfolio of over 150 hair care products from multiple brands sold across the world.

In an interview with Forbes last year, Mitchell opened up about following in his father’s footsteps. He said: "It was probably one of the more difficult paths I could have chosen for myself. I always knew I wanted to honour my father and better understand the industry and family business. But having the last name Mitchell made things harder for me.

"In beauty school, my work was scrutinised and my confidence shaken. Respect and opportunity are earned; they are not an entitlement, regardless of birthright. I was always aware I was under a microscope and I wanted the approval of my peers. I just kept my head up and stayed committed to completing what I had started."

Paul Mitchell UK announced Angus Mitchell's passing on Instagram, writing: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Angus Mitchell. On behalf of everyone at Paul Mitchell UK we offer our heartfelt condolences to the John Paul Mitchell Systems family.

"As members of the beauty industry, it is particularly poignant to reflect upon the lifetime of achievements and dedication that Angus Mitchell gave to hairdressers all over the world. We will miss him dearly."

Paul Mitchell Pro followed in suite posting to social media.
