British skincare and fragrance brand Haeckels has partnered with materials science company Pangaia to create a limited-edition soap block featuring a sustainable alternative to palm oil.

Developed with climate-tech startup C16 Biosciences, the Pangaia REWILD Body Block is the first-ever soap bar made with Palmless Torula oil - a natural, biodesigned replacement for palm oil.

It uses naturally occurring microorganisms and fermentation to create an alternative to palm oil that is rich in antioxidants and sterols, as well as being more sustainable.

Palm oil is known for its widespread and versatile use in the beauty and food industries. However, the ingredient is often sourced via mass farming that brings destruction to biodiversity, wildlife ecosystems and human life.

To highlight the main way in which biodiversity is cleared to make way for palm oil plantations, the soap is scented with natural oils to recreate the smell of the rainforest burning down.

Haeckels has manufactured the soap in-house at its production facility in Margate, blending Palmless with seaweed extract foraged from the shores of Kent, alongside organic materials such as aloe vera, mandarin peel and vetiver root.

It is also housed in treeless packaging made from cotton and bamboo.

Priced at £30, the REWILD Body Block is available online at Pangaia, Haeckels and Selfridges, with less than 200 blocks available worldwide.
