Sunday 26 November 2023, known as ‘Super Sunday’ as it falls over the Black Friday weekend, saw the highest volume of retail transactions processed so far this year, at 50.4% higher than the daily average.

Despite Black Friday’s reputation as the busiest day in the shopping calendar, Super Sunday surpassed both Friday (24 November) and Cyber Monday (27 November) in terms of retail sales by 13.5% and 26.2%, respectively.

Three in five (59.5%)retail transactions took place online on Super Sunday, compared to in-store, according to new data from Barclays, that sees half of the nation’s credit and debit card transactions.

The most popular days for UK shoppers in 2023, based on transactions processed by Barclays to date, are:

  1. Super Sunday (26 November) – sales up 50.4% versus daily average.
  2. Easter Monday (10 April) – sales up 32.7% versus daily average.
  3. Black Friday (24 November) – sales up 32.5% versus daily average.

Marc Pettican, Head of Barclaycard Payments, said: “Sunday emerged as the highlight of this year’s Black Friday shopping weekend – demonstrating the continued popularity of this retail milestone. Our data shows Black Friday is no longer a single-day event, with discounts on offer throughout most of November.

“Retailers will have benefited from consumers’ continued appetite for deals and will undoubtedly be hopeful that strong sales continue into December.”
